Since #BBM (and probably way before that…) many black student organizations have been speaking out about their own personal experiences and institutional racism on University campuses across the US. While some may brush these observations to the side and label them complaining, I believe that these movements do a great job of telling authentic stories of being a minority at a college institution. Furthermore these stories speak to larger issue’s highlighting the importance of a diverse curriculum and the importance of a diverse faculty that most school lack.
I am always inspired by storytelling and the different ways narratives are told. I will continue to learn and share my findings. Enjoy the video.
#BlackHero (Heroes) – As black history month comes to a close I’ve really enjoyed being able to share just a handful of the individuals that I consider MY black heroes. I try my best to work hard everyday understanding that I must fall in love with the process of trying to be great. None of us are perfect and success is relative. What my heroes have in common are their abilities to commit to something greater than themselves, courage to speak out against social injustice, be leaders and walk with pride. As I feel like I’ve just begun unpacking the treasures of my identity and embracing them in this wonderful world; there is so much to learn, so far to go and so much space to grow. Thank you for your love, energy and support.
Brown v. The Board of Education… Need I say more? Thurgood was a Supreme Court justice in the highest court of the land. Dedicated to justice, equality, fairness and freedom for all.
“None of us got where we are solely by pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. We got here because somebody – a parent, a teacher, an Ivy League crony or a few nuns – bent down and helped us pick up our boots.”
Multi-talented, funny, witty and outspoken. Whoopi has always been a portrait of honesty and has told it like it is. From being an actress, to voice actress, host, humanitarian, writer and producer she’s definitely one of my favorite #BlackHero’s.
“I used my imagination to make the grass whatever color I wanted it to be.”
Power couple… Movements by themselves but a force together. Iconic, legendary, risk takers.
“Soon the reign of shame on a woman’s body and her control of it will end. She will be autonomous. For she can’t truly be free without it. And oh boy…what a different world this place will be…when she is free.” -JPS
The vision to spread peace and love. Iconic. Bob was loved by the world and spread his message with a purpose.
“Life is one big road with lots of signs. So when you riding through the ruts, don’t complicate your mind. Flee from hate, mischief and jealousy. Don’t bury your thoughts, put your vision to reality. Wake Up and Live!”
